Work Hard, Play Hard: Prompts for Fun in Graphic Design

This publication is intended to be a workbook for teachers and students of Graphic Design. It explores the meaning of play in design through a series of assignments, prompts, and experiments. It encourages the absence of concern about outcome and judgment, as well as trying new ways of doing things, and taking risks in ways that are crucial to learning.

 
 
 

The prompts in the publication were all completed and presented in an example book alongside the workbook. This video serves as a supplemental piece to the example book, as it highlights the examples that were shown and illustrates the fact that several of these prompts were completed using motion graphics and animation.

Playing Cards

The cards serve as an easier way to access the content in the publication. They feature all of the design prompts and assignments that were in the book and provide an opportunity to choose a prompt to complete in a fun and random way.

 

Rule Book

The “Attn: Graphic Designers, a few simple rules for keeping design fun” rule book lists rules designers should remember if they want to keep having fun and finding ways to play in the field of graphic design.

 

Play in Design Education

A play pedagogy celebrates and re-energizes teaching and learning and offers an alternative approach to knowledge construction. The anxiety-free environment produced by playful learning encourages students to test the limits of their understanding and abilities with few repercussions. It brings students on board in contributing to their own education, making them active constructors of meaning in their own learning experiences rather than passive receivers of knowledge they need to memorize. Simply put, play helps keep graphic design fun.
