Speaking of...

One question the the MDES writing sequence asks is, Where is critical thinking in design happening and how is it embodied in and expressed through practices and projects in design? In our curriculum, the question rests on the assumption that graduate level engagement in design aims to extend beyond (though include) the crafting of design to critically engage with societ(y/ies) and the planet. This course began by asking students to explore and expand upon their understanding of their values and interests, their cares and their concerns, by recording, transcribing, editing, and minimally shaping conversations. The resulting book reflects two important truths, first, that the spirit of the times resides continuously in our hearts and minds, and, second, that the progression of understanding is itself an ongoing conversation.
