As You Gaze Upon Her / जैसे तुम उसे निहार्ते हैं / جیسا کہ آپ اسے دیکھ رہے ہیں۔
Given the plethora of languages, art forms, cultures, traditions, and, by corollary, popular culture, present in India, the idea of Indian graphic design is impossible to imagine beyond visual cliché. Ironically, some of the best graphic design in India occurred in the pre-digital publishing world of local magazines, created by designers who weren’t design-school educated. Rather, the graphic design that emerged during this period arose from of a natural, intuitive, quotidian point of view: that design lends itself to the creation of visual language that directly impacts people and their day-to-day lives. Rooted in the movement to decolonize design, this project attempts to locate a visual vocabulary that represents Subcontinental culture, albeit in broad strokes; the requisite first step in what I hope will become a history of Indian graphic design.
