(Un)Comfortable
Everyone has bad days, but what if those days never stop? Entangled in the speed of life, we get trapped between the future and the past. We have to force ourselves to stop and reflect on the present, but we’re afraid that we might fall behind. Unfortunately, mental health doesn’t wait for the world to stop spinning. And even though it may be hard to face the invisible bully in our heads, we mustn’t wait until it’s too late. (Un)Comfortable seeks to provoke healthy introspection and empathy through shared experience. Everyone, to some degree, struggles with interior demons, waging wars others know nothing about. But talking about experiences that go beyond the boundaries of comfortable conversations is difficult. Combining poetry and abstract imagery, my project aims to start a conversation about the darkest parts of living with mental disorders and reveal a mental health journey for what it is: messy, confusing, painful, elevating. Viewers might relate to the emotions described in the poetry or be awakened by the images and realize the potential of healing that comes from sharing one’s own experiences and difficulties. Beyond being a collection of visual and verbal storytelling, (Un)Comfortable demonstrates how design can be used to evoke emotions and bring people together; mind to mind, heart to heart.
