Preservation Through Recontextualization
Developments and innovations around tooling and manufacturing has meant greater creative freedom for designers and more creative possibilities, yet something has been lost. Designers no longer have a hand in the making and production of their work; the ‘human touch’ is missing. While crafts may be considered outdated or inapplicable to contemporary life, using ‘archaic’ practices in novel ways not only extends the life of the craft but also perpetuates the skills of the artisans who mastered them, ensuring that those skills continue to be practiced and passed on to future generations of makers. This project explores the ways in which a traditional technique can be revitalized through a process of recontextualization.
