Subject to Change
Subject to Change is meditation on my spiritual journey and the founding of my own sort of secular ritual. It’s an homage to the valuable traditions and craft associated with religion and a revelatory exploration of the metaphysical concepts of philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Through the medium of light and form I am visualizing the abstract and complex way in which Deleuze interprets reality and its constituent parts: the Actual and the Virtual. The Actual, in his ontological model, represents everything with concrete existence. The Virtual is a representation of all that could ever exist as a result of what already exists or the Actual. It’s confusing and esoteric but, with Subject to Change, I am attempting to visualize and disseminate the valuable and mystical (yet secular) nature of these ideas grounded in science. The Actual is represented by the physical form because it is by definition Actual, a structure of wood that shapes the future. The Virtual is represented by the interaction between form and light because it is in essence the potential of the Actual to affect change.
