Improving Mobility for Visually Impaired People Through Sound
According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) there are 1.1 billion people globally with vision loss. Vision loss has a large social and economic cost, including significant suffering, impairment, lost productivity, and lowered quality of life. One’s mobility and spatial orientation are severely impacted. Several navigation systems and devices exist to aid the visually impaired, but outdoor environments remain a challenge. And while most systems depend on the aural acuity of the visually impaired, commands are impersonal and robotic, as most AI systems tend to be. I am proposing a customized mobility experience with recorded spoken commands, so that the guide ‘feels’ more like a friend than a machine.
