Monachopsis
Transitions are never easy. There is always a degree of risk involved, because of the nameless unknowns that inevitably present themselves. But before we make a change — afterwards as well — we experience the subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place. There’s a word for it: monachopsis (pronounced: mo-na-KOP-sis). One feels clumsy, confused, invisible, diminished, lost. Having experienced this firsthand, I became interested in exploring the topic of transition visually. Monachopsis is a series of kinetic work designed to mimic the daunting and awkward process of stepping into the unknown and the unsettling emotions evoked by the experience.
