The Protection Collection
Black women have been setting trends for what seems like forever. The global trend in fingernail culture is largely attributed to Black women, one of the most famous being Olympian Florence Griffith-Joyner who broke the world record for the 100-meter dash three times sporting an immaculate long-nail manicure. Nails are a natural extension of oneself, much like jewelry, which is an extension of one’s personality, mood, and character. When nail culture started in the Black community, nail designs were accompanied by big rings, sometimes one on every finger. The Protection Collection combines these two aspects—long nails and rings—and adds a third: protection. As a Black female designer trained in industrial and graphic design practices, I am interested in reinventing how design is interpreted. The Protection Collection is a unique jewelry collection designed to keep long nails looking as good as new, elevating one’s nail game while adding to one’s jewelry collection.
