In its quest for a well-balanced society, America glorifies the idea of cultural representation. While balance and equal representation is important, it is just as important, if not more so, that individuals from different cultures know that their voices are heard, that their needs are met, on their own terms. The first time I read María Lugones’ essay, “Playfulness, ‘World’-Traveling, and Loving Perception,” first published in 1987, I identified with so much. Lugones looks squarely at her experiences as an Argentinian American woman and analyzes the ways in which she embraces her plurality in a society that expects women of color to conform to societal norms. As a Puerto Rican American female designer that came of age in the 21st century, I am motivated to examine my own experiences, visually and emotionally, in terms of consciousness (feeling), perception (seeing), and reality (living). No one should feel the need to conform to any one society norm, to be ‘one thing’ and not any other. There are no limitations. There is no box.
