The Last Leaf
It may not be possible to control circumstances, but we can control our choices. An effective design can influence and alter the dynamics of a situation and bring about positive change. The Last Leaf conveys the story of a person who is far from home, experiencing circumstances beyond their control, like homesickness. While the method and materials used and the objects produced are the same — a laser-cut book and wall hanging made out of wood — the iconography is unique to the person for whom it is designed. After all, every person has a different idea of home. My process as a designer always begins with story. The stories that inspire each edition of The Last Leaf have been shared with me, often over a period of time. The name, The Last Leaf, is borrowed from a short story by O. Henry in which the last leaf represents the constancy of hope. The Last Leaf project represents things we cling to when we are far from home, like the last leaf that clings to a tree, and offers the user a sense of solace and hope.
