Behind the Scene: Work Exploitation and the Undocumented
Let’s take a trip to the grocery store. Most of us will buy the essentials: fruit, meat, vegetables. Now let’s check out. Simple process, right? On our walk back home, we pass the cheese factory, which makes the very same cheese sold at our grocery store. Back home, we eagerly bite into the apple we just bought. Admiring its shining, bright red skin, we conclude that it’s a Delicious apple. It’s tasty, refreshing, firm, and it’s just an apple. What if we look past the scrumptious apple and concern ourselves with the who and how of it. Who picked this apple? Who packaged it? Who transported it? How did it end up in the produce department of our local grocery store? How did my apple make it undamaged from the orchard where it grew to my kitchen? The answer is clear: labor. Human labor, much of it exploitive. Behind the Scene exposes labor exploitation practices experienced by undocumented Latino workers, historically and to this day, that continues to exacerbate the push-pull between the United States and immigrant laborers.
