Everyone knows our planet is getting warmer. Whether due to human activities or natural cycles, extreme climates are rising. In particular, the El Niño phenomenon of recent years has caused many people to suffer from abnormally high temperatures during the summer months. I experienced heat exhaustion for the first time last summer. I was riding my bike on a sunny day, and I ignored the fact that I was sweating heavily. When I reached my destination, I was extremely dizzy and, even though I kept drinking water, I had to sit on the side of the road for more than a half hour before I could stand up. If this is what happens to a healthy young person like me, how will the less physically fit, children and the elderly be affected? According to the CDC, 10,527 heat-related deaths were reported in the United States in the period 2004 to 2018. reFresh collects a user’s sweat information at the collar, senses their dehydration status in advance, and gives timely feedback, alerting the user to take a break and drink water at the right time to avoid more serious consequences. If the user does not heed the alert, the device automatically releases the scent of a cooling essential oil that helps relieve detected signs of heat stress and reminds the user it’s time to stop, rest and cool off.
